Théodore Agrippa d'Aubigné was born on 8 February 1552 in Castle Saint-Maury near Pons, province of Saintonge in France (now Charente-Maritime, France). He was the son of Jean d'Aubigné, a judge, and his wife Catherine de l'Estang.

His father was the descendant of a family of tanners in Loudun. His mother's family was gentry (petite noblesse), She died at his birth.

In 1583 he married Suzanne de Lusignan de Lezay, of a cadet branch of the prestigious Lusignan family. They had three children:

  1. Constant d'Aubigné
  2. Louise Arthémise de Villette (1584-1663)
  3. Marie de Caumont d'Adde (1586-1624).

After his wife Suzanne's death in 1596, Agrippa had a son with his mistress Jacqueline Chayer:

  1. Nathan d'Aubigné

Agrippa d'Aubigné was forced to leave France in 1620 and settled in Geneva. There he married Renée Burlamacchi, daughter of Francesco Burlamacchi, in 1623.

He died in Geneva on 9 May 1630.
