Research Notes

He was in the American Revolutionary War (per Bill Alverson).

This Cornelius Dabney, III was NOT the one who married Lucy Winston.
Lucy Winston married Cornelius Dabney (son of James Dabney & Ann Sherwood) [4]

A source is needed to correctly identify which Cornelius Dabney was born on 12 Mar 1726 - was it ...

- son of Dabney James & Ann Sherwood ? OR
- son of Cornelius Dabney & Sarah Jennings ?

Because of this profile is the result of a merge, I suggest that ALL sources below be verified as to which Cornelius Dabney they are actually referring to.

update. sigh. got my wires crossed. The Cornelius with the 1764 will is not the will of this Cornelius but that of his father.

This Cornelius Dabney left a will dated 1764 that names his DECEASED son Cornelius ... so Cornelius with the 1792 will cannot be the son of Cornelius who died in 1764. Therefore, I'll be detaching Dabney-563 as his son - while it may at one point have been intended to represent who died before 1764, it has been developed as representing the Cornelius who died in 1792.

I wonder who the witness Cornelius Dabney was? His son Cornelius was deceased and that Cornelius's children were beneficiaries, so it wasn't a grandson by his son Cornelius. Perhaps this was a son of his son William? Which would support a man named William Dabney as a father of the Cornelius who died in 1792 - Cornelius Dabney IV (abt.1735-abt.1792)... or born c1740 per Dabney-279 - the profile attached to a man named William who cannot be his father based on birth years:
(I've posted my intent to detach them as father/son)

or maybe it was? The 1792 will of Cornelius appears to have as witnesses two of his sons, who are named as beneficiaries.

nope. someone with an interest in the estate (a legatee - someone who stands to gain from the will through a bequest or inheritance) is not considered a credible witness and such a witness would invalidate the will (after 1785 in VA, when only that portion of the will involving the witness was invalidated - see https://genfiles.com/articles/witnesses-to-wills-deeds/ for a better explanation).

There appears to be an issue with this Cornelius Dabney's year of birth. His "mother's year of birth is 1702. His year of birth is 1710. Maybe Sarah was not his mother?

Dabney-564 and Dabney-76 appear to represent the same person because: dups with same father and same sister and same brother-in-law

I am working on straightening out the confusion in the Dabney lines. The "Sketch" is currently on the wrong profile.

Sarah (Jennings) and Cornelius Dabney, Jr. had a son, Cornelius Dabney, III who was deceased when his father made his last Will.

Please see the sourced "Dabney Family of Early Virginia" website for the Cornelius Dabney (who married Lucy Winston) which says his parents were Ann (Sherwood) & James Dabney.

Would you be agreeable to me making the necessary changes ? Thanks for your consideration.

Dabney-226 and Dabney-76 appear to represent the same person because: same individual - merge of husband needed following merge of wife

Is this the same person as Dabney-76?
