General Notes

Most of the online family trees noted below list his father as JOSEPH DAILEY. I’ve included what I have found on Joseph in these early censuses but have not added Luther’s parents to wikitree until more verifiable references/sources are located. Note that in both 1790 & 1800 that a DAVID DAILEY is nearby. (See David’s 1800 photo with Minerva’s profile) I am unsure what the relationship is between Luther & David. Another unsure relationship is that between Luther and the SAMUEL DAILY who is on the 1790 Census.

Please tread carefully with the information located on these links. There are major errors and various false trails on each of them. For example; one lists Joseph’s grandfather as Samuel (born 1722)-then- Joseph’s father as Samuel (born 1731)…..NINE years old is a little too precocious for belief! To any direct descendants; I hope someday that Luther’s family here on wikitree is extended much deeper into the past—but, please, only add profiles that you have carefully researched and are as fully sourced/documented as is possible. Wrong information is often worse than no information.

Additional Research Notes

From http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/luzerne/1893hist/exetert.htm

“The ancient township records are lost. The oldest official document giving some idea of the settlers at the close of the last century is the following list of taxables for 1796: Joel Atherton, Joseph Black, Moses Bennett, Timothy Beebe, Roswell Beach, Peleg Comstock, Joseph Dailey, David Dailey, Jacob Drake, William Foster, Isaac Finch, Richard Gardner, John Gardner, Thomas Gardner, Abraham Goodwin, Richard Halsted, William Harding, Samuel Hadley, James Hadley, Stephen Harding, David Harding, Edward Hadsall, John Hadsall, Joseph Hadsall, William Hadsall, Peter Harris, Micajah Harding, Thomas Harding, Artimedorus Ingersol, Benjamin Jones, Sr., Nathaniel Jones, Sr., Majah Jones, Justus Jones, Benjamin Jones Jr., Thomas Joslin, Sr., Palmer Jenkins, Thomas Joslin, Jr., John Jenkins, Thomas Jenkins, John Knapp, Comfort Kinyan, Andrew Montanye, John McMillen, Benjamin McAfee, Benjamin Newbury, William Ogden, Jacob Wright, William Slocum, William Stage, James Sutton, Moses Scovell, Elisha Scovell, James Scovell, David Shauntz, David Smith, David Skeel, William Tripp, Abner Tuttle, David Smith, Jr., Gilbert Townsend, Lazarus Townsend, William Thompson, Thomas Williams, Ebenezer Williams, Allen Whitman, Zebediah Whitman, Nathan Whitlock, Joseph Whitlock and John Scott.

Two years later Capt. Stephen Harding, John Jenkins, Peter Harris, David Smith, S. Dailey and J. Phillips were made commissioners to lay out additional public roads in the township.”

Possible 1790 Census

See notes below. The families of David, Joseph & Samuel Dailey are listed. See attached photo.

Name: Joseph Dailey
Event Place: Not Stated, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
Page Number: 146 [1]

Possible 1800 Census

See notes below. Joseph & Elinor seem to be listed as older than appropriate. There is a less than 10 year old daughter listed who may not have survived to the 1810 Census IF this is the same family. There are 4 male children noted. See attached photo. Marked page 374. See photo attached to Minerva (Marked Page 371) which has her potential family and the family of David Dailey (45+).

Possible 1810 Census

See notes below. A Joseph Dailey family is listed with a Colvin Dailey family. Joseph's family shows 3 male children/1 female. The ages of the males doesn't align with the on-line trees that show Colvin as the oldest son. If this Colvin is the same as the one with Luther in the 1820 Census, his firstborn son didn't survive to be listed in that later census. See attached photo (also note 1810 photo attached to Minerva). The ages of Joseph & Elinor are in the correct range they would be according to the on-line trees.

Name: Joseph Dailey
Event Place: Exeter, Luzerne, Pennsylvania

Possible 1820 Census

As I track backwards, I become less confident in what I've located. Consider this and everything previous to be filed in the POSSIBLE folder and only here for reference. Some new information may be found that rules this out or that confirms it. I have a problem with Luther's age on this census-IF it is correctly enumerated, it disconnects from birth date and from the 1830 census and could be the wrong Luther. However, even with the ~wrong~ age, the fact that he appears with likely brother Colvin (which is a consistently seen family name) makes me consider this as reasonable. See the attached photo.

Considering the 1810 census & without exact dates of departure/arrival, we would be hard-pressed to put exact birth locations for the children born before 1820.
Name: Luther Dailey
Event Place: Clifford Twp., Susquehanna, Pennsylvania (Susquehanna was created in 1810 from a portion of Luzerne County)
Clifford Township is located in the southeastern corner of the county. Susquehanna is at the northeastern corner of the state.
Page Number: 14[3]

1830 Census

The Dailey family (like so many others!) have so many common given names that circulate through the generations that I can only say I THINK this is the correct enumeration for this Luther. If this is correct, then either Luther's or Minerva's mother is living with the family. See the attached photo and note additional questions there.

Considering the 1820 census & without exact dates of departure/arrival, we would be hard-pressed to put exact birth locations for the children born between 1820 and 1830.
Name: Luther Dailey
Event Place: Falls Twp, Luzerne, Pennsylvania (In 1842 Wyoming County was created from a portion of Luzerne-Falls Township became part of the new county )
Falls Township is about 40 miles southwest of Clifford Township
Page Number: 332[4]

1839 Death

We know that Luther was not alive (or with the family) in the 1840 census. The consensus of on-line trees/data indicates that the death location listed is correct. The data below is questionable and added simply for reference. The photo attached to Luther's profile at FaGR is actually one for a child (named Luther) of Merit & Elizabeth Dailey. I question if the family would have brought Luther's body with them the ~35 miles from La Moille in Bureau County to a VERY undeveloped Ogle County for burial?

Burial: Chapel Hill Cemetery
Chana, Ogle, Illinois

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Luther by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Luther:
