English

Gottlieb Daimler, son of Johannes Däumler, baker in Schorndorf (Württemberg), and Wilhelmine Friderike Fensterer [1], [2], was born as "Gottlieb Wilhelm Däumler" on 17 March 1834 [3], [4]. He was baptized on 21 March 1834 (protestant) [3], [4], and had his confirmation in 1848 [5]. After learning gunsmith in Schorndorf from 1848 to 1852, he worked in Grafenstaden (Alsace). In 1857, he began to study engineering in Stuttgart, and graduated in 1859. From 1862 to 1865, he worked at Maschinenfabrik Daniel Straub in Geislingen an der Steige. In 1865, he became manager of the Bruderhaus machine factory in Reutlingen, where he met Wilhelm Maybach, who became his closest collaborator for the next decades.

On 9 November 1867 [7], [8], [9], Gottlieb married Emma Pauline Kurz in Maulbronn.

In 1869, Gottlieb joined the Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Karlsruhe. He became factory manager of Gasmotoren-Fabrik Deutz in 1872. After leaving Deutz in 1882, he bought a house in Cannstatt (near Stuttgart) and built a workshop. On 16 December 1883, the first of Daimler's and Maybach's engine was patented. In 1885, the second engine was patented, and the first motorcycle was created, followed by a motor coach in 1886. A new factory was built in 1887, and in 1890 the "Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft" (DMG) was founded.

On 9 July 1893 [13], Gottlieb married Lina Schwend, Widow Hartmann. Gottlieb died in Cannstatt on 6 March 1900 [6], before experiencing the successes of the new mercedes racing cars.
