Biography

Elizabeth Dale was born on 30th May 1817 in Salford to parents John and Margaret Dale. They were Methodists. Her father was a hat manufacturer and furrier with offices at 57 Water Street. Thus like Jonathan she was brought up in a well-to-do family. She married Jonathan Marshall Duke on 18th December 1837 in Cathedral, Manchester at the age of 20. Almost immediately they went to live on the Isle of Man work so that Jonathan could gain experience in the greater family’s business. She enjoyed life on the island. When her father-in-law died it was easy to forget about the tumult and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of island life. However, when they returned to Manchester times were much tougher. In total, she had six children: Joseph Chadwick (born 1838), Samuel Dale (born 1841), John (born 1842), Margaret Ann (born 1845), Thomas Marshall (born 1848) and Elizabeth Dale (born 1851). They lived in rented accommodation after the bankruptcy in Russel street and then Chapman street. The stress got to her. After she got sick they rented from Elizabeth’s brother in Chester road. Nevertheless she died in Manchester in 1858, aged just 41. She is buried in Manchester General Cemetery. The family’s difficulties impressed on her children the value of financial security.
