Joe served an apprenticeship as a carpenter builder. He had a keen interest in family history and on hearing that the family was originally from Ireland he decided to trace his roots. He kept a journal of his travels and the information he found but when he returned he had contracted TB. His clothes and everything he returned with was burnt including the journal, such was the fear of spreading the dreadful disease. Any record of his exploits has been lost.
