James first served in the Company D Coleman Company, and R. G. Stoners Batallion. This battalion was merged into the 9th Cavalry Regiment [also called 4th Mounted Rifles] that was organized in December, 1862, by consolidating Breckinridge's and Stoner's Kentucky Cavalry Battalions [2]
He also served with the : 9th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry accessed on 10 March 2022 under Colonel WLP Breckennage was and Lutenant Colonel Rly Stoner. [1]

Capt James Dale was a Prisoner of War during American Civil War.
He was captured on 16 August 1863 for being a Confederate Soldier by the 14 Kentucky Cavalry.
Imprisonment Date: 18 August 1863 in the Bath County Jail in Owingsville, Kentucky.
He was transferred to Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois 24 Feb 1865. [3]
