Emma was born in Hull, Yorkshire in early 1893.[1]
She was the daughter of John Dale, a ship's carpenter, and Esther Taylor. Emma was her parents' sixth child: she had two older brothers ( Francis and Albert) and two older sisters (Lily and Edith) as well as another sister (Alice) who had not survived infancy.
