Biography

Catherine was born in County Limerick, Ireland, in 1831, where she was raised through the hard times of the potato famine of the 1840's, and which claimed the lives of many of the countrymen and resulted in the great Irish emigration to America, Australia and NZ.

Catherine Ada Daley (Daly). Catherine’s Brother Michael, his Wife Mary and children came to Tasmania Australia on the ship Kingston in August 1854. As Catherine had no family left in Ireland she decided she would come as well arriving in Tasmania on the ship William Hammond on 25th December 1854. She was a free settler as was her brother and his family. Her age when embarking on the ship was recorded as 23 years old.

James Cooper 2nd. married 30.06.1860 Catherine Ada Daley in Hobart Town, Tas. An Alice Daley was witness. An Alice McKay was Godmother to her son Matthew Cooper in 1861. Another Sister of Alice's could have been godmother to her son Thomas in 1858, If Ellen McDonough was her Sister Ellen Daly.

Some time after the children were born James decided to change their surname to Naylor, in about 1877 just prior to moving to Karoola in the northern part of Tasmania which is 26kms from Launceston. The children were bought up as Naylor. Thomas, the eldest child, in later years, about 1890 reverted back to the surname Cooper. All the other children kept the name Naylor.

Catherine Daley was 21 when she married James Cooper according to marriage certificate. She couldn’t have been Michael Daley’s sister Catherine who would have been 27! A big difference. She was Michael’s daughter Catherine and Alice Daley, the witness, her sister.
