Care should be taken to not confuse this Ann Dalgleish with the Ann Dalgleish who died in Hobart in 1850, aged two months, who was actually Ann's younger sister Margaret, misnamed on the death registration.

Biography

Ann (Dalgleish) Drake was born in Van Diemen's Land (1826-1856)

Ann Dalgleish was born on the 16th May 1847, at Frederick Street, Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land, Australia, the eighth known child, fourth daughter of Scottish-born stonemason, William Dalgleish, and his Scottish-born wife Isabella "Isabel" Short.[1] Ann was not yet named at the time her birth was registered. In February 1850, a younger sister, Margaret, was born, but sadly died two months later of "debility".

Ann (Dalgleish) Drake has Scottish Ancestors.

Ann's father died of haemoptysis, in Hobart, on the 29th May 1862, aged 55 years.[2]

Ann and David Drake, already a budding shipbuilder for the Colony, were married in 1863, in Sydney,[3] subsequently having six known children, four daughters, and two sons :

  1. William (1864–1950)
  2. Isabella Dalgleish (1867–1914)
  3. Ann (1869–1959 (Cragg))
  4. Elizabeth (1870–1872)
  5. Daniel Cameron Dalgleish (1872–1880)
  6. Alexina Elizabeth (1874–1957)

Sadly, the baby Elizabeth died on the 21st June 1872, aged just two years five months, in the same year Ann gave birth to her second son, Daniel.

Ann Drake née Dalgleish passed away on the 5th June 1876, in Balmain, New South Wales, Australia, aged just 29 years,[4] and was buried in the Balmain Cemetery, Balmain,[5] where her infant daughter, Elizabeth, and her brother-in-law: Alexander McKay Drake, had already been laid to rest; and where her son Daniel would also come to lie in just four short years.[6]
In July 1880, David applied to administer Ann's "goods, chattels, credits, and effects", such to be granted after 14 days.[7]
