James was born in 1763 to John Dalrymple (1726-1805) and his wife (not named)[1]. He was baptized 26 Jun 1863 at Inch, Wigtownshire, Scotland.[1]
James emigrated to North Carolina from New Luce, Wigtownshire, Scotland in May 1775, at the age of 11[2] with his parents John Dalrymple and Margaret Gordon (1736-1796); and his siblings, aboard the Jackie.[2]
He married Rosanna Dowd (Source Needed) prior to 1799, in North Carolina.
They had nine children:[3]

James passed away in 1829[3] and is buried at Dalrymple Burial Grounds, in Sanford, North Carolina. His headstone is missing.

"James married a sister of Cornelius Dowd named Rosanna. Their sons were: John, Archibald, James and William. Daughters were Polly, Margaret, Janet, Nancy and Jane."
"Polly married John Shepherd. Margaret married Capt. John McIver, father of James D. McIver. Janet married a Copeland. Nancy married Sion Campbell when advanced far in life. Jane Dalrymple married Miller Duncan McIver and one daughter was the fruit of this union. She married Scotch Iver McIver. Their children were Henry McIver who married a Harrington, Dr. John McIver's wife and Presley McIver's wife."
