Biography

Sallie Dalton was the daughter of David Dalton Sr. and Hannah Goad Dalton. The 1790 census of Rutherford County NC shows that David and John Halford lived next door to each other on the census page. John Halford Jr. was the son of John Halford Sr. who also is in the 1790 census and is also next door to his son and David Dalton Sr.

The Rutherford County Marriages list that John Halford and Sallie Dalton were married on Oct. 27, 1789. This would be the reason that a few short months later that they had no children listed in the 1790 census. By the 1800 census John Halford Sr. had died because his wife Lucy Halford appeared as head of house and John Halford Jr. and Sallie was there also with a family of children all under the age of 10.

By the 1810 Census John Halford Jr. did not appear in the census and some of his children appeared in Rutherford County Court Records as being orphans that were bonded out because they were orphan's. This would suggest that both John and Sallie Dalton Halford were both deceased before 1810. The 1820 census and marriage records show that some of their children were appearing as adults with head of house listings in the census and marriage bonds where they were listed. It is well known that this time in Rutherford Co. NC was filled with danger.

The Cherokee Indians were raiding isolated farms and homes on a regular basis. The infringement of the settlers into some areas that the British Crown had promised that no settlers would encroach. After the Revolutionary War for Independence. The newly formed government of the United States did not feel the British Treaty was any longer in force. Therefore the increase in Indian's raiding, killing and burning crops increased.

I have found only one record that pertains to this family loosing family members to an Indian Raid. The brother of Sallie Dalton, Thomas S Dalton, testified in a Court Hearing for his pension in the Rev. War told the Court that proof of his age was in the family bible that was lost in an Indian raid of his Uncle's home. Two family members died in this raid and therefore gives credit that it is possible that not only John Jr and Sallie died in this time but also both John Halford Sr. and David Dalton Sr also died about this same time.

This leads one to believe that some cause whether Indians or disease was a contributing cause.
