Thomas was baptised at Crosby-on-Eden, Cumberland on 22 September 1805, son of Thomas Dalton and Margaret Holliday.
Thomas was ordained deacon in 1832 and priest the following year.
His marriage to Mary Buckham was registered at Whitehaven, Cumberland in the fourth quarter of 1837.
In 1839 he enrolled at St John's College, Cambridge as a "ten-year man". He was awarded a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1850.

1862-1889: canon of Carlisle Cathedral.
