Charles was born in North Carolina in 1843. He was the son of William Dalton and Mary Polly Jones. He was worked as a blacksmith and as a tobacconist. On 10 May 1861 Charles enlisted as a private in Co. H, 13th North Carolina Infantry. He mustered out as a full Corporal when he was killed on 3 May 1863 at Chancellorsville, Virginia. In a cemetery in Reidsville, Rockingham, North Carolina there is a military plaque commemorating his life and his service.
