Political Life
AMARIAH DANA AND "SHAY'S REBELLION"..
According to "Families of Amherst, Massachusetts" Vol 1 by James Avery Smith, Amariah Dana and his brother, Eleazar Dana, were both active in Shay's Rebellion. Both took the oath of Allegiance Feb 1787, probably to avoid imprisonment or worse.
Shay's rebellion was an uprising "by farmers against unsettled economic conditions and against politicians and laws which were grossly unfair to farmers and working people in general. They protested against excessive taxes on property, polling taxes which prevented the poor from voting, unfair actions by the court of common pleas, the high cost of lawsuits, and the lack of a stale currency....Their actions included mobbing the court buildings in Northampton, Great Barrington, Worcester and Concord to prevent the sitting of the courts, whose actions had been grossly unfair to working people.
On Aug 29, 1786, rebel mobs stormed the courthouse in Northampton to prevent the trial and imprisonment of debtors. In Sept 1786, Shay and about 600 armed farmers stormed the courthouse in Springfield. Governor Bowdoin countered with a militia of 4400 troops. On January 25, 1787, Shay led 2000 rebels to Springfield, MA to storm the arsenal, but government forces of 1200 soldiers led by General Shepard quelled the uprising. The rebels were captured and sentenced to death for treason in Feb 1787, but they were later pardoned." [49]
There is further discussion of Amariah and his son's participation in Shay's Rebellion in the Lehmann Manuscript [39]

A. I have linked the Find a Grave site here [7]. Please notice that the children up until Freedom have records with a birth mother named Dorothy. Freedom was born in 1777. [9] - Lamberton-139 14:47, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
B. (Original Note - records have been found since this was written) Following Freedom is a gap of 9 years. Ruth Williams is probably the birth mother of the children born in 1786 and after [30]. I did not see a death record for Dorothy or a marriage record for Ruth.
C. His participation with the Green Mountain Boys is conformed in the Annual Address at the the Vermont Historical Society, [51]
