Biography

Flag of Lincolnshire (adopted 2005)
Mary (Danby) Smart was born in Lincolnshire, England.
Mary was born in Middle Rasen, Lincolnshire, England, and baptised in 1826 in Market Rasen. She was the daughter of Nicholas Danby and Sarah Leary.[1] She lived with her family in Middle Rasen in 1841.[2]

Mary had a daughter, Sabina, in 1849.[3]

She married James Smart – the widower of her younger sister, Maria – in 1860.[4][5] This was illegal under the 1835 Marriage Act. James was the publican of the Rose and Crown on West Street in 1861.[6] Two of Maria's children[7][8] and one of Mary Ann's died in 1864.[9]

The family remained at the Rose and Crown until 1881 at least.[10][11] In June 1882 the license for the Rose and Crown was passed from James to William Spencer; in turn, John Grubb transferred the license for the Kingston Hotel on Cumberland Street to James.[12]

James died in 1883 in Hull.[13]

By 1891 Mary lived with her son Alfred at 10 Carlisle Street, Hook, Yorkshire.[14] She died later that year.[15]
