Biography

Descendant William Alexander “Little Dover” Dandridge was born in Hanover, Virginia 1812, died in Henry Co Nov 1865, was a planter and large slave owner. He was a great, great grandson of Alexander Spottswood, Gov of Virginia 1710-1723. He married Sarah Nicholds, sister of Greenberry Nicholds. They settled in Henry CO, near Martinsville, VA and had 5 children: Thomas West, Robert Bollins, Clay, John, and Sara Virginia who was only a few weeks old at the time of her mother’s death in 1845. In 1847, he married his second wife, Mary Jane Hamner (daughter of Nancy House Hamner), born in Brunswick Co VA, died in Tate Co, Miss 1879. After his second marriage, William Dandridge moved to his plantation “Locust Grove” near Spencer, Virginia. The Civil war broke out and the death of John, his youngest son, who died in service, and great financial losses left him so broken in spirit and healther that he never recovered. He died at 1865 at the age of 53 years. William and Mary Dandridge had nine children: Nannie Anderson, Mary Pocahontas, Emma Louise, Martha Washington, and Bessie Lee; sons James Spottswood, Samuel Hamner, George Gilmer, and Walter Alexander. After the death of her husband Mary Dandridge and family moved to Tate Co, Miss, where she lived until the time of her death in April 1879.
