Biography

John T. Daniel was born on 18 January 1804 in Virginia. There was a stone placed in the Magnolia Cemetery at the grave of John T. Daniel engraved with this date of birth. The photograph of the gravestone appears to be of a gravestone more modern than one which would have been placed in 1880 when John T. Daniel died.[1] The 1850, 1860, and 1870 United States Censuses all support a birth year of 1804 and a birth place of Virginia.

The parents of John T. Daniel are unknown, though there are family trees on other genealogical websites which allege that his parents were Isaiah Josiah Daniel and Carrey Caroline Causey. So far, none have provided any source evidence whatsoever to support this allegation.

Marriages

Possible/Questionable Wife 1: Sarah Robison
Marriage Date: 7 Nov 1832
Marriage Place: Wilcox County, Alabama[2]

(Note: The above could have been the marriage of a different John Daniel--John W. Daniel--to Sarah Robison. This couple appeared on the 1850 Census for Wilcox County, Alabama with a number of children in the household.)

Definite Wife 2: Sarah Moncrief
Marriage Date: 14 Nov 1839
Marriage Place: Clarke County, Alabama[3]

Census Records

John Daniel and Sarah (Moncrief) Daniel were not enumerated in the 1840 Census for Wilcox or Clark Counties, but Sarah’s father, Caleb Moncrief, was and there were male and female adults of age 20-30 living with him who could possibly have been John and Sarah Moncrief Daniel.[4]

1850 United States Census, Clarke County, Alabama: He was enumerated as Jno Daniel, age forty-six, on the 1850 United States Census. He was head of household. The other members of the household are believed to be his wife Sarah (Moncrief) Daniel and his children. The oldest child, Robert, may have been his son by a previous relationship or could have been not a child but a nephew or other family member. The census does not provide enough information to make a determination. All the others are believed to be his children by his wife, Sarah (Moncrief) Daniel. The family's race is transcribed as black but it is possible that the census-taker used ditto marks for all white individuals and only used letters to designate non-white individuals. John Daniel's occupation was recorded as farmer.[5]
