Biography

James was born in 1784 in Fairfield, South Carolina. He was the son of William Daniel and Lucretia Bell. He passed away in 1816 in South Carolina.[1] James married Mary "Polly" Hill and had seven children.

James DANIEL wrote his Last Will & Testament on 3 April 1816, died before 16 May 1816, leaving seven children, all minors.

In the name of God Amen, I James DANIEL of the State of South Carolina and District of Edgefield being weak in body but of perfect sound mind and memory do make and declare this to be my last will and testament. Vis. In the first place all my just debts are to be paid in the proportion of one third from the part I give my wife and the other two thirds from the balance of the estate. Secondly. My will and desire is that my wife do have those two Negroes forever Vis Cato and Hannah to do as she pleases with and I will to my lawful children (i.e. Lucretia, Mary, Catharine, Wm. Washington, Martha Sarah, Susan Caroline, and James Lodowick) the rest of the Negroes i.e. Betty, Big Dave, Little Dave, Ralph, Sam, Vine, Kiziah, and Lucy, to be equally divided by them by ballot in the following manner vis. Whenever the first child comes of the age of 21 or marries, the said child to receive its equal proportion and the rest be kept together in the same way and divided in the same manner till the last comes of age or marries. Thirdly. It is my desire that all the balance of my estate is to be divided between my wife and children in the proportion of one third to my wife and two thirds to my children that is to say land stock of every kind, household and kitchen furniture, and property of every kind that I possess. Fourth. It is my desire that the goods and stuff of every kind in my store (immediately) be sold on a credit till the First day of February 1817. Fifth. It is my will that my children be well educated for which my wife will pay one third and the balance to come out of their estate and further for the property and children to be kept together on this place as long as deemed proper by executors. I do hereby nominate and appoint by beloved brothers William and Jesse DANIEL & Theophilus HILL Executors of this my last will and testament.
