Biography

Robert was born in 1755. He was the son of John Daniel and Isabella Kennedy. He passed away in 1823.

Orphan court records of Chester County 1752-1761 Volume 6 page 74 Upon the petition of.ISABELLA WILLSON the court appoints MONTGOMERY KENNEDY and MICHAEL FINLEY to be.Guardians for DAVID, JOHN, ANDREW and ROBERT Children of JOHN DANIEL deceased.

Taken from a Berkley County Historical Society publication: Robert Daniels Sr. was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania in 1755 of Scotch-Irish stock. He came to Berkeley County after the war of the revolution. His wife was Ann Brown Daniels, and a son, Robert Daniels Jr., was born in 1784. Robert Daniels Sr. bought a lot at Bucklestown (Darkesville) in 1789 from James Buckles and built a house on the lot. The house was also used as a tavern.

The lot is described as being in James Town (Darkesville) in Berkeley County on Middle Creek on Winchester Street. This lot was on the west side of present Route 11, right along Route 11, to the south of Middle Creek. He also had horse stables on the opposite side of the street...Robert Daniels Sr. purchased the mill along Mill Creek (built by Henry Sherrard in 1790) in 1809, a mill which was to come to bear his name and bring his family into contact with the Sherrards.

He bought it from his son-in-law, Robert Stewart. He sold it in 1811 to his son, Robert Daniels Jr. with part of the payment being the indenture of his son to him. Robert Daniels Sr. died in Darkesville in 1823 at the age of 68 years.

Robert Sr.'s will is in will book 7, page 131. His death announcement can be seen in the April 23, 1823 issue of the MARTINSBURG GAZETTE. In 1825 his widow, Ann Daniels advertised the old Darkesville home place in the GAZETTE of March 17, 1825: " For Rent Tavern stand in Darkesville, for a number of years has been occupied as a Tavern. Apply to Ann Daniel residing with her son Robert Daniel on Mill Creek.

Notes

Accuracy has me using Virginia as the location of Robert and Ann's home. Just a reminder to all reading this, West Virginia did not split from Virginia until 1861, well after their death.

The writer of the above information did not have the last name correct. Census and court records show the last name as Daniel.
