Medora was born in 1858. She was the daughter of Mancy Daniels and his first wife Harriet Baker. [1] At the time of the 1860 U.S. Census, taken on July 17, 1860, Medora (age 1) was living with her parents, Mancy (age 24) and Harriet (age 23), on their farm in South Franklin with new born brother Oliver (8 months old). Harriet’s mother Hannah Baker (age 64) was living with the Daniels family. [2] Their farm was on the south (or southeast) side of Washington Street in South Franklin, a short distance east of Union Church. It is possible the farm belonged to Harriet’s parents, but no evidence has yet been found to support that. [3] In the 1865 Massachusetts state census, taken on May 1, 1865, Madora A. [Medora A.] Daniels (age 6) was living with her parents, Mancy (age 28) and Harriet (age 28), on their farm in South Franklin with her three siblings: Oliver S. Daniels (age 5), Anna M. Daniels (age 3), and Walter E. Daniels (age 2). Harriet’s mother Hannah Baker (age 68) was still living with the Daniels family. [4] Medora’s mother Harriet Baker Daniels passed away in Franklin, Massachusetts on October 3, 1867, only a few months after her sixth child was born. She is buried in Union Street Cemetery in Franklin. Medora’s father re-married in 1868. [5] In the 1870 U.S. Census, taken on August 2, 1870, Dora A. [Medora A.] Daniels (age 12) was living with her father Mancy (age 35) and step-mother Mary (age 24) on their farm in South Franklin, with her three siblings: Oliver S. Daniels (age 10), Anna M. Daniels (age 8), and Walter E. Daniels (age 7). Mary’s newborn child Ella B. Daniels (8 months old) was also living there. [6]
Medora married Artemas Barden Jr., a blacksmith from Norfolk, on February 6, 1879. The marriage took place in Franklin. He was 21 and Medora was 20. He is the son of Artemas Barden Sr. and Hannah L. Guild. He was born in February 1856. [7] On November 11, 1883, Madora Amy [Medora A.] (Daniels) Barden and husband Artemas Barden had a son named Walter Raymond Barden. They were living in Norfolk, Massachusetts at the time of Walter’s birth. [8] Medora’s father Mancy passed away at his home in South Franklin on October 3, 1899. [9] He is buried with Harriet and Mary in Union Street Cemetery, Franklin. [10] In the 1900 U.S. Census, taken on June 18, 1900, Medora (age 42) and husband Artemas (age 44) were living in San Gabriel Township, Los Angeles County, California with their son Walter Barden (age 16). Artemas was still a blacksmith. [11] As reported in The Pomona Progress in early November 1902, “Mrs. Artemas Barden, of Los Angeles, and son, Walter, visited at the home of I.F. Daniels [Irwin Fremont Daniels] from Saturday to Tuesday.” [12] In 1904, Dora A. Barden and husband Artemas Barden, engineer, were living at 1214 State Street in Santa Barbara, California. Their son Walter R. Barden was also living there. [13] However, in the 1905 City Directory, Artemas and Walter Barden were living at 322 West Carrillo in Santa Barbara. Dora, or Medora, is not listed. They must have separated. Dora was living by herself at the time of her passing in 1913. [14] Dora A. Barden (age 57 years, 3 months) passed away on 28 September 1913. She was residing at 54 Pennsylvania Avenue in Santa Cruz, California. Her funeral was held on September 30 at the Wessendorf & Staffler funeral home. Her obituary was published in the Santa Cruz Evening News on Monday, September 29, 1913. It did not say where burial was to take place. [15] Shortly before she passed away, Dora was visited by her sister Anna Maria Daniels Webber and niece Effie Medora Webber Ferguson [Mrs. J. W. Ferguson of Hanford, California]. Anna Maria was visiting from Rhode Island. [16] In the 1910 U.S. Census, taken on May 21, 1910, Artemas Barden (age 53) and son Walter R. Barden (age 26) were living in Soquel Township, Santa Cruz County, California. [17] When he registered for the World War I draft on September 12, 1918, Walter (age 34) gave his birth date as November 11, 1883 and his address was 101 Wilkes Circle, Santa Cruz, California. He listed his father, Artemas Barden, as his next of kin. His address was Arrowhead Springs [Hotel], San Bernadino, California. [18] In the 1920 U.S. Census, taken on February 6-9, 1920, Artemas (age 62) was a boarder at the Arrowhead Hotel in San Bernadino Township, San Bernadino County, California. He was employed as an elevator operator. [19] Artemas passed away in San Mateo, California on February 21, 1926 at the age of 69. [20] Walter R. Barden passed away in Santa Cruz, California on March 21, 1928. According to the 1928 California Voter Registration List, he resided at 2 Surfside Avenue in Santa Cruz. [21] [22]
