Biography

Georges Jacques Danton was a leading figure in the early stages of the French Revolution.

Georges Jacques Danton was the son of Jacques Danton and of Marie Madeleine Camut. He was baptized on 26 October 1759 in Arcis-sur-Aube. His godparents were Georges Camut, carpenter, and Marie Papillion, daughter of Charles Papillion, surgeon.

Danton's father died in 1762, leaving two surviving children, Georges and an elder sister, Anne-Marguerite (she married Pierre Menuel, a merchant, in 1784). Danton's mother remarried in 1770 to Jean Recordain, a grain merchant.

Georges Danton obtained his licence in Reims and became a lawyer in Paris. There, he married Antoinette-Gabrielle Charpentier, the daughter of a rich café owner, on 14 june 1787 at the church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois in Paris. They had three sons:

  1. François Danton, born in May 1788, died in infancy
  2. Antoine Danton, born 1790, died 1858, and had issue
  3. François Georges Danton, born 1792, died unmarried in 1848

On 10 February 1793, while Danton was away on a mission, Antoinette died while giving birth to their last child, a stillborn son.

Danton remarried less than five months later on 1 July 1793 in Paris to 16-year-old Sébastienne Gély, daughter of a court usher. In addition to the official civil wedding, a religious ceremony was secretly performed.

In April 1793 Danton became one of the 9 founding members of the Comittee of Public Safety.

On 30 March 1794 Danton was arrested, along with Camille Desmoulins other (actual or accused) Dantonists. They were tried between April 2 and April 5 before the Revolutionary Tribunal. The trial was highly political.

Danton was guillotined on 5 April 1794 (16 Germinal year 2).

Biographie
