On Sep 14, 1758 records shows Joseph as a private in the 1st Virginia Regiment ( Lt. Col. Stephen's company ) at Fort Dunquesne (now Pittsburg, Pa) during the French & Indian War.
After that service, he and his family moved southward, living in Laurenburg, Va and North Carolina. After enlisting in the Revolutionary army in North Carolina, he moved his family to Georgia and settled in Burke county. His family lived in that part of Jefferson that was cut off of Burke county and took refuge from the hostilities in a place on Butler's Creek, about 6 miles from Augusta.
Joseph received a grant in 1769 for 250 acres of land and in 1770 another grant for 250 acres.
Joseph and Elizabeth had seven children: James (1742), Benjamin (1746), William (1752), Joseph Jr (Nov 27, 1762), Joel (Sep 11, 1765), George; and Seth (1770). Joseph and 5 of his sons fought in the Revolutionary War. there is no record of George serving.
A Joseph was captured by the British, imprisoned on a ship in Charleston, SC harbor and died in 1780 or 1781. It is not clear if it was the father or Joseph Jr who died on the ship. After the war, several of the brothers received land grants for the service.
