Boston Latin School Class of 1904, recipient of Franklin Medal; Dartmouth College Class of 1908, Phi Beta Kappa. Mathematics. Contracted tuberculosis / died of overwork while in the service of American Tel & Tel by whom he was employed as a statistician. He was expected to succeed his friend and fellow Dartmouth alumnus Walter Sherman Gifford in the position of Chief Statistician before he fell ill; Gifford went on to become president of the company (in 1925). A representative from AT&T summarily denied Edwin's surviving minor children his pension benefits, according to the recollection of their then-guardian, Frederic Arnold Merrill, a maternal uncle, whom I personally interviewed in 1982 in Portugal. - John W.
