Biography

Lydia Fairbank Darling was born in Holden on December 24, 1819.[1] She was the daughter of Darius Darling and Susannah Gates Fairbank. [2]

At the age of 26, Lydia married Larkin Smith on December 16, 1846, in Holden, Worcester, Massachusetts, when he was 24 years old. They had five children - George Irving, Charlotte Amelia, Adeline Darling, Emeline Fairbank, and Larkin C.

In 1850, Larkin and Lydia were living with their children in Springfield, Clark, Ohio.[3] In 1860, the family lived in Woodstock, Champaign, Ohio.[4]

Lydia believed in young ladies behaving in refined ways, as evidenced by her daughters being sent back to her sister to be "finished". During her life in Ohio Lydia and Larkin made several trips back home to Holden (their daughter Adeline was born there).

In 1870, the family was located in Milford Center, Union, Ohio, where Larkin served as postmaster.[5] In 1880, the couple was living with their son Larkin in Urbana, Champaign, Ohio.[6]

The 1900 Census found Lydia in Somerville, Middlesex, Massachusetts where she was visiting with her daughter Emma Ash and family (her son George Irving and family also lived nearby).[7] She appears in the directory in Urbana in 1904 and 1908.

In her time as a widow following her husband's death in 1902, she struggled financially and physically. Papers in the National Archives indicate that she had meager savings and suffered from "chronic curvature of the spine". These papers indicate also that she successfully claimed a widows pension based on her late husband's Civil War service.[8]

Lydia reached 88 years of age and died in Springfield, Clark, Ohio on January 7, 1908. She was buried at Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield.[8]
