Charles Hial Darling was born on 9 May 1859 in Woodstock, Windsor, Vermont, United States, son of Jason Lewis Darling (~1829 - 1897) and Ellen L. (Paul) Darling (~1836 - 1888). He was a judge.
In the 1870 census Chas (age 11) was in Woodstock, Windsor, Vermont.[1]
Charles married Agnes Christmas Norton (~1861 - 1941) Their children were:
Charles Hial Darling was United States Assistant Secretary of the Navy from 1901 to 1905.
He attended Green Mountain Perkins Academy and Montpelier Seminary before earning an A.B. from Tufts in 1884. He was admitted to the bar in 1886 and practiced with Orion M. Barber in Bennington, Vermont. He was appointed as a municipal judge in 1887 by Governor Ebenezer J. Ormsbee in 1887 and reappointed by each governor until 1901.
Darling served as president of the village of Bennington in 1895 and as a representative in the Vermont House of Representatives in 1896-97. In 1900, he presided over the Vermont Bar Association.
Darling was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1901. The term of office was December 17, 1901 to October 30, 1905.
Charles married Agnes Christmas Norton (~1861 - 1941) and had three daughters: Margaret, Alice, and Elizabeth .
In the 1900 census Chas (age 41), Lawyer, was the married head of household in Bennington, Bennington, Vermont.[2]
Daughter Margaret married Jrhr Randall Roberts on 19 February 1923 in Burlington, Vermont, United States.[3]
Charles died on 31 Oct 1944 in Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont, United States of America aged 85.[4][5]
Darling was a life member of the Vermont Historical Society and a Sons of the American Revolution officer in 1908. He was a Freemason.
