William R Darnall was born about 1840 in South Carolina, USA as the son of Thomas J Darnall (abt.1808-aft.1880) and Sophronia W (Beadell) Darnall (abt.1819-abt.1900) ... Did she marry twice? Could she also have last name of Strange? - both names have been seen with no birth record yet to be found.^[1]

In Sep 1850 William R (10) was the oldest child of Thomas (41) and Saphronia (31) Darnall living in Laurens, South Carolina, USA with his parents and siblings - Henry Maxus Darnall (9), Thomas S A Darnall (5), Martha S Darnall (3), and Nathaniel C Darnall Darnall (2), and Abram Greenleaf (25), shown as a clock maker with no additional reference as to how he is or is not related. His father was working as a farmer.^[1]

In 1870, William (30) and Susan B? (30) and five children were living in Laurens, South Carolina. Son, "Lud", (shown as Silas in 1870, but as Samuel, Ludlow, and "Lud" on all subsequent records that have been found) was age 4. His siblings were: Burress E Darnall (abt.1859-aft.1870) (11), Robert Beadell Darnall (abt.1864-abt.1934) (6), Susan Lula Darnall (abt.1868-) (2) and Malvinia (Darnall) Hicks (abt.1869-aft.1880) (9 months).^[2]

"W R" served as a private on the Confederate side in Co. 3 South Carolina Infantry.^[3][4]
