This name is spelled variously: Darnell, Darnele, Darnall, Darnel, John Darnele arrived in Salem, NJ in 1700. He settled in Evesham, NJ, now Mt Laurel, NJ and established the Darnells Mills. The name as applied to the progenitor of the family was spelled Darnele, afterward Darnel, until 1829 when it became Darnell.
John DarneleDarnell married Hannah Borton, daughter of John Borton, a large land owner and one of the first settlers. John Darnell became possessed of a large tract of land through his father in law, a part of which has been in the Darnell homestead ever since, and is owned in 1882 by John E Darnell, son of David Darnell.
The Darnell burying ground is located on the homestead, and in it the several generations of the family have been interred until 1857, when it was abandoned for that purpose. [2]
John Darnell, whose father died at sea, emigrated from England and landed at Clemell on the Delaware River above Salem, ca. 1725. He married Hannah Borton, daughter of John Borton. They had at least five children, 1730-1744.[3]
