The name as applied to the progenitor of the family was spelled Darnele, afterward Darnel, until 1829 when it became Darnell.

John Darnell became possessed of a large tract of land through his father in law, a part of which has been in the Darnell homestead ever since, and is owned in 1882 by John E Darnell, son of David Darnell.
