Charles joined the U.S. Navy on 9-Jul-1945, just two months after his 17th birthday, and trained at the Naval Training Center in San Diego, California. He joined active service on 4-Sept-1945, just two days after WWII ended and was assigned to the U.S.S. Alabama (BB-60), a South Dakota Class Battleship.
Charles reached the rank of Seaman 2nd Class (S2c) on 16-Nov-1945 and was credited with 7 months sea duty for time served aboard the U.S.S. Alabama.
Charles was honorably discharged from service on 8-Jul-1946.
