Biography
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Fairview Cemetery in La Junta, Colo., for Lavern J. Darnell, 59, of Rocky Ford, Colo., a former Imperial Valley resident who died Sunday in Arkansas Valley Medical Center in La Junta.
Pastor Wayne Cathey of First Southern Baptist Church of La Junta will officiate. Mr. Darnell was born April 28, 1942, in La Junta.
He attended elementary school in La Junta and junior and high schools in Cheraw, Colo.
Following his high school education, Mr. Darnell moved to the Imperial Valley and returned to Rocky Ford in 1998, where he owned and operated a small hay farm.
Mr. Darnell married Deni Miller in Yuma. He worked in the cattle industry, feed lot and medicine sales.
He enjoyed team roping and team penning, according to family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Guy and Lena Evelyn Darnell; and brother, Jerry Darnell.
Survivors include his wife, Deni Darnell of Rocky Ford; daughter, Rene Darnell of San Diego; daughters and sons-in-law Julie and Lee Jensen of Imperial and Mary and Steven Darnell-Wendell of LaHood Park, Mont.; step-daughters, Kari Foster of Weatherford, Texas, and Mandi Turner of Brawley; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Yvonne Darnell of Rocky Ford; and grandchildren, Briar, Chelsey, Tyler, Cassidy, Lynsey and Blaike.
The family suggests memorials be sent to First Southern Baptist Church, 20th St. and Smithland Ave., La Junta, CO 81050, or through Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home, 401 Raton Ave., La Junta, CO 81050.
