Biography

Augustus Darr was born on July 26, 1848 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. [1] He was the son of Joseph Darr and Teresa Walliser. [2] [3]

The 1850 Federal Census, taken Oct 28th, listed Augustus, age 2, as living with his parents Joseph and Teresa, his brothers Joseph, Thomas, Francis, Charles and John, his sister Josephine and three servants in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. [4]

The 1860 Federal Census, taken June 8th, listed Augustus, age 11, as living with his parents Joseph and Teresa, his brothers Charles, John, Samuel and George W. and his sisters Kate and Mary Lavinia and a servant Teresa in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. [5]

The 1870 Cincinnati City Directory listed Augustus as a clerk at the southeast corner of Main and 2nd and boards at the southeast corner of 7th and Race in Cincinnati. [6]

The 1873 Cincinnati City Directory listed Augustus as a cashier at 44 Main and resides at the southeast corner of 7th and Race in Cincinnati. [7]

The 1880 Federal Census, taken June 9th, listed Augustus, age 32, as living with his parents Joseph and Teresa, his brothers Charles and George W., his sister-in-law Catherine, his cousins Blanche and Eugenia, his cousin Joseph D. Johnson and two servants at 272 Race Street South in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. His occupation was listed as cashier. [8]

Augustus Darr married Teresa A. Slevin in Rock Island, Illinois on November 23, 1881. [9]

In a November 23, 1881 newspaper in a column titled Rock Island, it was stated: "A very happy event will occur this morning at the Catholic church. It is the wedding ceremony of Mr. Augustus Darr, of Cincinnati, and Miss Teresa R. Slevin, a sister-in-law of Mr. L. M. Buford, of this city. The lady is well known in this city and her many friends unite in wishing the happy couple the best that earth affords." [10]

In a November 24, 1881 newspaper in a Matrimonial column, it was stated: "Darr and Slevin, at Rock Island, Ill. Special Dispatch to the Chicago Tribune. Davenport, Ia., Nov. 23 - Mr. Augustus Darr, a prominent banker of Cincinnati, O., and Miss Teresa A. Slevin were united in marriage at 8 o'clock this morning, at St. Joseph's Church, Rock Island, by the Rev. Father Mackin. After a banquet, the bridal couple left for Cincinnati." [11]

In a November 24, 1881 newspaper in a column titled Rock Island, it was stated: "At eight o'clock yesterday morning, occurred the marriage of Mr. Augustus Darr, of Cincinnati, and Miss Teressa A. Slevin, of this city. The ceremony was performed at St. Joseph's Catholic church, and was witnessed by a few friends and the immediate relatives. Rev. Thos. Mackin officiated, and after the wedding, the party adjourned to the residence of Mr. L. M. Buford and partook of an elegant marriage breakfast. The happy couple left for Cincinnati on the 10 o'clock train, there to make their future home." [12]

The marriage ended when Augustus' wife Teresa passed away on February 25, 1884.

The 1884 Cincinnati City Directory listed Augustus as a cashier at 44 Main and residing on Ridgeway Avenue in Avondale, Cincinnati. [13]

On March 9, 1885, Augustus applied for a U. S. Passport to travel aboard for recreation. He was 36 years old, his height was listed as 5'-11", his forehead was high, eyes were blue, his nose was regular, his mouth and chin were medium, his hair was red, his complexion was florid and his face was round. The passport was issued on March 11, 1885. [14]

The 1890, 1891 Cincinnati City Directory listed Augustus as living on Ridgeway Avenue in Avondale, Cincinnati. [15]

In a May 2, 1892 newspaper column titled Men and Things, it was stated, "Augustus Darr, who is so very well known on Third street, is lying very ill at home on Ridgeway avenue, Avondale. Few people in the city are better known than Gus Darr. He has been an invalid for a year, but only within the past few days has he been confined to his bed. Gus was one of the vets of Third street, and his romances are handed down daily along the line even during his absence. His host of friends are confident that he will be out soon. [16]

In a May 19, 1892 newspaper column titled Death, it was stated, "Darr-Augustus Darr at his late residence in Avondale, on Sunday, May 15, 1892, in the 44th year of his age. Funeral from his late residence, Ridgeway av., Thursday morning at 8:30. Requiem high mass at St. Andrew's Church, on Mound st. at 9 o'clock. Burial private. [17]

Augustus Darr passed away on May 15, 1892 in Avondale, Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio at age 44. He was buried in Saint Joseph New Cemetery in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. [18]
