GUILFORD FLAGS AT HALF MAST FOR PRIVATE DARROW

Flags flew at half mast in Guilford last Friday in honor to the first Guilford soldier to pay the supreme sacrifice on the field of battlein France. Charles Darrow, 20, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Calhoun, being the fighter to go down under Hun shells at the battle of Seicheprey.
Last Thursday evening a telegram was recieved by Mr. and Mrs Calhoun reading:
"Deeply regret to inform you that Private Charles Darrow, Infantry, is officially
reported as killed in action April 20. signed McCain, adjutant general."
Private Darrow was the son of Stella Miller now of New Haven and was born in
Wallington, but had spent most of his years in Guilford with his grandparents and
attended Guilford schools.
Two years ago he enlisted in the Second Regiment, Connecticut,Infantry, and
served on the Mexican border, and continued in service with this command until it
was consolidated with the First Regiment and 102 U.S. Infantry stationed at Yale
Field where the regiment remained until sent to France eight months ago.
HONORED
On Tuesday, October 2, 1918 the Guilford American Legion board met. In an
unanimous vote the Guilford Post was renamed "Darrow Post" in honor o ffallen
soldier Charles W. Darrow.
