Mary was born in New York during 1821. She married Daniel Briggs sometime in the 1840s probably in New York. The 1900 US Census records her as the mother of six children, with two living at that date.
Mary and her family were living in Wisconsin before the US Civil War began in 1861. Her husband and three brothers enlisted as soldiers and Mary volunteered to be a nurse. Mrs. Briggs worked at Good Samaritan hospital in St. Louis, also at Ironton, Missouri, and finally at Harvey US Army Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin until the end of the war.
After the war, she lived with her daughter Eva's family and later resided at the Old Peoples Home in Elgin, Illinois. Mrs. Briggs died in 1912.
