Biography

The Grünwettersbach Evangelische Kirche records the birth of Johann Georg, son of Johann Georg Daum and Eleonora, in Mutschelbach 16 Jan 1707 and his baptism 17 Jan 1707.[1]

Although both Grünwettersbach and Mutschelbach are generally shown as part of Baden, that was not the case at this point in their history.[2][3] Since 1535, Grünwettersbach had been under the control of the Herzogtum Württemberg. Mutchschelbach was originally a 2 part town: Obermutschelbach belonging to Baden(-Durlach) and Untermutschelbach belonging to Württemberg. When the Grünwettersbach church records refer to "Mutschelbach", they seem to mean the part in Württemberg.

In Dec 1738 (possibly the 23rd - the record is difficult to read), Johann Georg married Anna Maria Räpple in Söllingen, Markgrafschaft Baden-Durlach. Johann Georg is identified as the son of the deceased Joh. Georg Daum, former citizen and resident of Mutschelbach in Württemberg. Anna Maria's father, Joh. Friederich Räpple, had also died by this time. He was a former Schultheiß of Söllingen.[4]

Johann Georg and Anna Maria appear to have returned to Mutschelbach after their marriage. A child is baptized there 12 Feb 1741, and no baptisms with these parents were found in the Söllingen church records for 1739-40. They had at least 4 children in Mutschelbach whose births and baptisms are recorded in the Grünwettersbach Evangelische Kirche records:

  • Maria Barbara, b. 12 Feb 1741[5]
  • Anna Maria, b. 23 Oct 1742[6]
  • Georg Heinrich, b. 3 Feb 1747[7]
  • Maria Catharina, b. 24 Apr 1749[8]

Johann Georg was described as Heÿligenpfleger (church warden) in son Georg's baptismal record[7] and as p. t. Armenkestens Pfleger (poor chest overseer) in daughter Maria Catharina's baptismal record.[8] He is also usually described as a bauersmann (farmer).[6]

Johann Georg died in Mutschelbach 15 Sep 1777 after a fall, age 70y 8m, and was buried 17 Sep 1777.[9]

Research Notes

  • The region where this family lived in the 1700s was not divided into nice neat contiguous states. The best map I have found is a 1771 map from the historical atlas of Baden-Württemberg
  • Both Grünwettersbach and Mutschelbach were transferred to the Großherzogtum Baden in 1806 as part of the Tausch- und Epurationsvertrag between Württemberg and Baden signed 17 Oct 1806.
