Biography

William Davenport's origins are not known. He is estimated to have been born around 1650; this date could be up to ten years off.

Wiliam Davenport and his wife Mary were in Westchester County, New York, by 7 June 1693 when they served on the Grand Jury for the Court of Sessions of Westchester, at the trial of one John Jennings, accused of "stealing one-halfe of a four-year-old steere."[1]

According to Giles and Franklin, William was "living in Fordham Manor after 1696 and active in real estate purchases and sales from 1680 in Westchester County."[2]

He was married to Mary, but she was likely not the mother of his children. A deed by "William Davenport senior of the Manor of Fordham, yeoman," conveyed land in Fordham to "my son Thomas Davenport" (by then an adult), "retaining use to myself and my new wife Mary." Giles and Franklin inferred from various entries that the "new wife, Mary" was the widow of John Hitchcock, a man with whom William Davenport had made several trades of land on both sides of "Bronksis River."[3]

William was the father of William Davenport, Jr. Thomas Davenport, Sr. He also had a daughter Rachell.[4]

Giles and Franklin also reference a family Bible presented to Thomas Davenport (born 11 April 1750) by his grandfather, Thomas Davenport, that includes entries showing that William Davenport, Sr. of Fordham and his wife, Mary, had four children:[5]

  1. Thomas Davenport (1682-1759)
  2. William Davenport (1683-1735)
  3. Francis Davenport (1685-1720)
  4. Rachel Davenport

He died 1736 in West Farms, Westchester, New York, United States.[6]

Research Notes

The Giles and Franklin material contained on pages xii to page xxii contain background information, including source citations, that explain the authors' conclusions about the relationship of Thomas Davenport to other known Davenport lines. Some of this information probably was obtained from research performed by Donald Lines Jacobus. See Donald Lines Jacobus letter to Zora Parks for a copy of the letter. Confirmation of this information would be valuable.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

I have an image of a letter from David Lines Jacobus to Zora Parks dated 1956, while research on Thomas Davenport, Pioneer was going on. It gives details of his research on William and son Thomas on Long Island. I can post to the profile images or send to someone, but I'd really like to make it available.

That sounds very interesting! Since it apparently relates to several family members, maybe it would best to present it on a free-space page that can be crosslinked with other pages.
