Biography

Robert Davenport was born in Belgrave, Leicestershire, England.

Robert Davenport was born on 19th July 1846 in Belgrave, Leicestershire, England to Mary Davenport, a single woman, and baptised on 15th November 1846 at the church of St Peter, Belgrave. His maternal grandparents were Robert and Elizabeth Davenport. ^[1][2][3]

In 1851, Robert Davenport (51 born Ashby de la Zouch) was recorded as being a gamekeeper. He was living in Royal East Street, Leicester with his wife, Elizabeth (54, born in Breedon on the Hill), two daughters, (Mary (26, a fancy knitter born in Sheepshed) and Ann Norman (23, born in Ashby de la Zouch) a son-in-law, William Norman (23, a framework knitter, born in All Saints, Leicester) and three grandchildren, Robert Davenport (5, born in Belgrave, Leicestershire), Fanny Davenport (1, born in St Margarets, Leicester) and Sarah Norman (1, born in St Margarets, Leicester). ^[4]

In 1861, Robert Davenport was a 16 yr old colliery labourer, living with his grandparents in Dumps Road, Whitwick, England, United Kingdom. ^[5]

In 1871 he was listed as 25 and still living with his grandparents, Robert age 76 and Elizabeth age 80, still in Dumps Road, Whitwick. ^[6]

Robert Davenport was married to Clara Ellen Topliss in 1887 in Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire. ^[7]

Robert seems to have trimmed some years off his age in the 1891 census, where he was recorded as 39. He and his wife, Clara Ellen (27, born in Normanton le Heath), had two children, Mary Toplis Davenport (3) and John Wm. Davenport (1), both born in Whitwick. ^[8]

In 1901, Robert Devonport (54, a coal hewer) was recorded as being a widower. He had five children, age from 2-13 years. They were living in Hermitage Road, Coalville. ^[9]

1902 marriage to Hannah Matley (LNAB = Walker). ^[10]

In 1911, Robert (63) and second wife, Hannah (66, with whom he has no children) were living in Hermitage Road, Coalville, along with three of his children as well as Hannah's three grandchildren and great grandchild. ^[11]

Robert William Davenport of 68 Hermitage Road, Coalville died age 70 years and was buried on 16th January 1917 at St John the Baptist, Whitwick, Leicestershire. ^[12]
