John was baptised on the 16 February 1849, Crowan Parish Church.[1] He was the son of Stephen Davey and Anne Bassett.

John came out to Australia in 1861 as part of a large family group on the SS Great Britain (Voyage 21) which arrived in Hobson’s Bay, Williamstown, Victoria on the 23rd Dec 1861.[3] He was aged of 12 on the SS Great Britain and travelled with his mother Mrs Ann Davey, aged 35 and his siblings: Elizebeth Davey, aged 16; Jane Davey, aged 18; and Stephen Davey, aged 9.
Burial
John died on the 18 May 1895 in Eaglehawk, Victoria, Australia and was buried on 19 May 1895 in Eaglehawk Cemetery, Section L, buiral Plot # 187, he is buried with his wife Mary L.R.L. Davey.[4]

" OUR EAGLEHAWK LETTER. (FROM OUT CORRESPONDENT.) Sunday, 19th May.
Death. — Early on Saturday morning a very old and respected resident, .Mr. John Davey,, died at his residence, Campbell-street. .Mr. Davey's illness was of short duration, extending over merely a week, the complaint being inflammation of the lungs. He was aged 47 years, and was for many years a prominent adherent of the Salvation Army, in which he was an officer of the local corps. A wife and six children are left to mourn their loss. The funeral took place this afternoon to the Eaglehawk cemetery, and was attended by a large number of members of the Rechabites' Lodge and friends of deceased. The service was .conducted by the Rev. C. Anthony'; Mr. E. C. Brown carrying out.the arrangements."[5]

Saturday-morning about 4 o'clock Mr John Davey, of Campbell street, passed away at his residence after a very short illness. The deceased .was a member of the Eaglehawk Salvation Army since shortly after the inauguration of the corps. On the previous Saturday evening.be caught a slight cold whilst standing in the open air in front of the Town Hall, and on the following evening caught a fresh chill after leaving the crowded barracks, He had been subject to bronchitis for about six years, and the cold soon attacked his lungs and developed into inflammation. He was obliged to take to his bed early in the week, and in spite of the care of Dr Gowan he died as stated within a week. He .was just 47 years of age and leaves, a widow and six children. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the remains being interred in the Eaglehawk Cemetery. There was a very large attendance at the funeral, including many members of the Salvation Army, and a good muster of the Refuge Tent of the Rechabites, of which he was also a member.. The Rev C. Anthony (Primitive Methodist) conducted the church burial ceremony.. Bro Paul, the Chief."[6]
