James was born about 1869[1] at Southampton, England.[2]
In 1893 he married Elizabeth Barnes of Kaiapoi.[3]
As of 1941 he was living at Waitara.[4]
He passed away 9 Jul 1943 at Porirua, New Zealand, age 74. He was a cabinet maker, formerly of Waitara but late of Inglewood.[5][6] He is buried at Inglewood Cemetery, Row 10 Plot 5N.[7]
His will (1939) names 3 children: Ethel Annie Kilpatrick, Cyril Claude, and Gordon Arnold.
There is a baptism record for James Davey, 27 Aug 1868, parents James & Susan , at Shirehampton, Bristol. Perhaps this is correct and "Southampton" in the probate affidavit was a misunderstanding.
Possible passenger log: Halcione 1874 to Hawkes Bay: James(27, Devon, Laborer), Susan(26), James(6), Fanny(3), John(10mo).[8] There are APW entries at Woodville School for parent James Davey and children Fanny, John, Ethel Annie, and Minnie Ada -- clearly the same family as the passenger log.
In 1899 a James Davey of Dannevirke was found guilty of with stealing a bicycle and 22 pounds of tobacco, and sentenced to 12 months hard labour (various references in paperspast / Police Gazettes). This could well be him, as Ethel Annie was born at Dannevirke 1898 according to NZBI.
