Leaving at age 15 with various jobs (Michells wool-skin yard - farmhand- furniture removalist - car yard cleaner).
In 1960 Roger joined the Australian Army - recruit training at 1RTB, Kapooka, New South Wales, then to School of Artillery, North Head followed by 102nd Field Battery, 1st Field Regiment, Holsworthy.
Royal Australian Artillery
In 1965 National Service was reintroduced and Roger applied for transfer as a Drill & Weapons Instructor at Kapooka.
During army service Roger wed Marlene Gwendolyn Howie 21 September 1963 at Woodforde, South Australia.
They set up house in a converted garage on Mulgoa Road, Mt. Pritchard, New South Wales (now Elizabeth Street) followed by Mary Street, North Wagga Wagga in 1965.
In 1966 Roger left the Army (Homesick wife so happy wife happy life). They set up house at Highbury, South Australia and stayed there until February 2014 then moved to Dernancourt, South Australia.
Next employment for 12 years as a Security Guard followed by 10 years as a Bus Driver. His final jobs were with the State Transport Authority as a Timetables Clerk and finally Roster Clerk with the Railways.
Retired October 2001.
Main interests are Genealogy along with playing & refereeing English Billiards
His interest in Genealogy started in 1984 when he asked his mother about her parents. Roger never knew any of his grand parents.
She mentioned various names of her uncles & aunties.
Many visits to the BDM office in Adelaide, South Australia and the State Library writing everything down in a blue note book. Oh for a personal computer in those days.
Son Craig purchased a 2nd hand Commodore late 1980's and said you do this, this and that - happy days. Spent a full day typing, went back the next day and could not find it.
Craig where is my typing? - WHAT - you mean I have to save it. Lesson one, learn & listen.
After purchasing a computer and discovered the joys of searching on the internet. Had a stint on My Heritage but soon realised the duplication by many people after copying someones unsourced & error driven work created problems. Roger you have Spanish heritage REALLY.
In September 2014 a search on Google and hey presto WIKITREE - looks a bit complicated - go on give it a try Roger.
Downloaded a Gedcom - mistake - should have created profiles.
After getting the feel of how it all works Roger became a Data Doctor - many thanks to everybody who offered suggestions and help in some form or other.

Thanks for the welcome to the Cornwall Team. My interests are Cornish miners that emigrated in the 1800’s to California, US to work in the gold mines.

Of course you may create a profile for Herbert Osborn Barratt. He and Mabel Quiller-Couch must have divorced almost immediately after they married, for I cannot find them on the 1901 census. Of course that does not mean they are not there! just that *I* cannot find them.

I have removed the image you uploaded of Mabel's baptism. FamilySearch's Terms of Use expressly forbid using this sort of thing on a commercial site, which WT is.

Hi Roger, I am currently doing check-ins for the Australia project, and noticed that you have been contributing to the Kangaroo Island project, but not a member of the Australia Project. Are you still interested in working on Kangaroo Island? If so, I'll join you up to the Australia Project as well. Thanks for all your wonderful work on WikiTree for Australia. Hi Roger,

I have recently been adding ancestors from my Catt/Cate line as part of the Sussex team. I am now concentrating on the Hockridge line which emanates from Cornwall and Devon. Could I be added to the Cornwall team, please. Regards Dave Roberts PS I'm a fellow South Australian but now officially "No Fixed Address" grey nomad.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for adding me to the Cornwall team. I currently transcribe for the OPC Cornwall website. I have family/ancestors from Cornwall so do a lot of research in St-stephen in Brannell, Roche and St Austell. I also joined the sourcerers team so would like to add sources for Cornwall profiles that need them.

Thanks Kylie

What are you enjoying most about being in the project? What would you like to see improved or changed? Would you like to continue in the project moving forwards?

We're looking forward to hearing back from you,
