Biography

Esther (Davidson) Garbett was born in India to parents of British citizenship.

Esther was born at Sylehet in India in 1818, the daughter of Captain Hugh Davidson and his wife, Esther Pearce, and was baptised at Dacca on 4 August 1818.^[1] Her father died in 1825 but his widow remained in India with her children. At Jubbulpore on 14 December 1839 Esther married Christopher Garbett, surgeon of the East India Company and son of James Garbett of Herefordshire. Their first child, George Owen James Garbett, was born on 14 July 1841 at Saugor in Bengal and was baptised on 17th November. The baby died the following year.

At Nagpore on 8 October1844 her younger sister, Sarah, married Sisley John Batten.

Esther and Christopher's next child, Isabel Charlotte, was born in Nagpore in 1845. Esther was pregnant almost immediately and went with her daughter to England. The baby, Georgina, was born at Upton Bishop in Herefordshire and was baptised on 8 October 1845. It seems that Christopher was in England for some time since a son, Edward, was born in 1846. Commonly families kept in touch so Esther would have learned that Sarah had given birth to a daughter, Clara Sarah Batten, in 1847. By 1848 Christopher was back in India, leaving Esther and the children in England. Sarah Batten died in 1850 and her motherless daughter was sent to England to live in Rochester with her grandmother, Sarah Batten.

At the 1851 Census Esther was living with her son Edward and daughter, Isabel at Aston in Warwickshire. ^[2] Georgina had been farmed out and was living with her great aunt, Mary Ludlow, at Cheltenham. On the other hand Elizabeth Davidson, Esther's 29 year old cousin was living with Esther.

1857 was the year of the Indian Mutiny. Christopher was killed at the Siege of Cawnpore on 27 June and Esther's mother, then aged 65, is said to have been killed during the mutiny as well though the information is unsourced.

By 1861 Esther was living with her children at Edgebaston. Clara Batten aged 14 was by then living with them. ^[3] The children were growing up and on 12 July 1866 at St Bartholemew, Edgebaston Isabel married bank clerk, Charles Wheeler. Clara, who had returned to India, married Captain Frederick James Lawder. Esther and Georgina went to live with Isabel and her husband and in 1871 they were all living together at Sheldon in Warwickshire. ^[4]

In 1881 Esther was living in Portsmouth with a lodger. ^[5] Georgina was then visiting in Bromley, Kent. Clara Batten was also living in Portsmouth with her children by her second husband, Francis Randolph Trevor. Clara died towards the end of 1882. It was in Portsmouth that Georgina married Francis Trevor, in 1885. Esther lived to see her daughter bear a daughter of her own, Ada Mary Randolph Trevor, but the baby died the following year.

Esther died at 35 Victoria Road North, Portsmouth aged 71 on 12 September 1889. Her estate was valued at £423 5s 11d probated on 19 October to one of her executors, Edward Henry Garbett, manager of the Hull Dock Company. ^[6] Esther's death was registered on Portsea Island. ^[7]
