Biography

Samuel Davidson was born in South Carolina in 1774. His parents were John Davidson and Tabitha (Porter) Davidson.

From South Carolina he came to Southern Illinois; thence to Macon County in 1830; was married in South Carolina to Elizabeth Mays, who was born in the latter state in 1776.

He married Elizabeth Mayes in 1795. His brother William married Elizabeth's cousin Elizabeth Mayes.

Samuel and Elizabeth had ten children. Seven daughters and three sons: John, Andrew, and Baxter. Baxter Davidson remained on the old homestead in Decatur county. [1]

In 1800 he was living in South Carolina. [2] Males: 20-30 - 1; 60-70 - 1; Females: 20-30 - 1; 60-70 - 1
Would this be Samuel and his wife Elizabeth and his parents? Her father died in 1799.

Heirs of his father John Davidson listed in John's will written on 4 Sep 1801: Joseph Davidson, James Park, John Leeper, John Davidson, William Davidson, James Davidson, Gilbert Shaw, Samuel Davidson (the youngest heir) [3]

The 1820 Census (Samuel was 46) from Wayne County, Illinois [4] shows the following:
Males to 10 = 1 (Baxter?);
Males 16-18 = 1 (Andrew?);
Males 18-25 = 1 (John?);
Males 45+ = 1 (Samuel)
Females to 10 = 2 (Cynthia and Nancy?);
Females 10-15 = 2 (Ellen and Elizabeth?);
Females 16-25 = 2 (Polly and Margaret?);
Females 25-44 = 1 (???);
Females 45+ = 1 (Elizabeth);
Occupation = Agr
NOTE: the above doesn't account for one girl... Sarah?. Or, are the dates of birth wrong for some girls?

In 1829 James D. Campbell, Andrew and John Davidson arrived from South Carolina. Samuel Davidson did not arrive until the next year. [5]

1840 Census - Macon County Illinois for Samuel Davidson: Males: 26-45 - 1; 60-70 - 1 (Samuel); Females: 20-30 - 1; 60-70 - 1 (Elizabeth)

The Mt. Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized on the 24th of April 1830 at the house of the Rev David Foster. Members included Andrew Davidson, Aseneth R. Davidson, Samuel Davidson, Elizabeth Davidson, Nancy Davidson (22) and Eleanor Davidson (21).

He passed away about 1843.

Buried in Mount Zion Presbyterian Cemetery, Macon County, Illinois. Burial. [6]
