Biography

The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Mary Davidson married James Arnold in 1791.[1][2] Her father was Obediah Davisson (or Davidson) of Harrison County, Virginia (West Virginia). [3]

Research Notes

Birth year estimated from husband's birth year. Surname on handwritten marriage record appears to be Davisson, not Davidson. Other sites list her as Davidson but perhaps the LNAB should be changed.

Parents: FamilySearch gives her father as Obediah Davisson on one entry for the marriage record, but the handwritten record does not list her father.[4] Don Norman's site says James Arnold "married Mary Davidson, a daughter of Obidiah Davidson in Harrison County VA (WV) January 13, 1791" (https://hackerscreek.com/norman/ARNOLD/THOMAS.htm)

There is an Obediah Davisson (1720-1806) on WikiTree, with a little bit of documentation; he has a son Daniel with substantial documentation. FindAGrave lists Obediah as married to Elizabeth Barkley (1721-1789).[5] If correct, they are too old to be Mary's parents. At wvculture.org, there are two additional marriages of Obediah Davissons in Harrison Co, West Virginia, to Elisabeth Robinson in 1788 and to Polly Webb in 1803. These are probably too late to be Mary's parents, since she was born in ~1771.

Don Norman's site has a listing for Obadiah Davisson (https://hackerscreek.com/norman/DAVISSON/OBADIAH.htm) that appears to refer to Davisson-3027 (also includes son Daniel). He lists a son Obadiah with no additional information given, but it looks like he would have been born sometime after 1750, which would put him in the right age range to be the father of Mary. A census record listed on Ancestry.com lists an Obediah Davisson born in 1750, but the actual record cannot be viewed.[6]

In summary, Mary's father may be an Obediah/Obadiah/Obidiah Davisson/Davidson, but clear documentation of this has not been found, and it is unclear which Obadiah Davisson is being referred to. Additional sources are needed.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

The Davisson (typical spelling) family that was in New England in the 1600s and that eventually came to the part of VA that is now West VA were part of DNA “Family 2” at the Davidson DNA Project (via FTDNA). There are many Y DNA donors in that family who are in “Family 2.”
