Sam Stephen Davies was born on 11 March 1861 at Fairfield in the County of Derby in England. His birth certificate only names his mother Elizabeth Davies, there is no name and surname of father or occupation of father listed on the certificate and presumably he was illegitimate. His first name is Sam not Samuel and it was his mother also residing at Fairfield who registered his birth on 30 March 1861.[1]
