Biography

John was born in 1869. He is the son of John Davies and Margaret Gannicliffe.

He went to Liverpool and married a Margaret from Ireland according to Arthur Williams.

We had assumed that this was a Margaret O'Keefe: her age as per her marriage record matched her age in the 1891 census.

However, there appeared an anomaly: the manuscript of Charlotte's baptism record gave Margaret as "olim McDonald". So had we got the wrong Margaret?

Yes. The Davies-McDonald marriage certificate (attached, procured by Arthur Williams) of 25 January 1891 confirmed the matter: the address given, and their ages, and his trade (barman) were as per the 1891 census, John's father's profession is given a Shoemaker. Correct!

Her father George is deceased, a labourer.

Note, however, that daughter Charlotte was born 6 june1890... so it seems that "olim McDonald" was not quite accurate!

In the 1901 and 1911 censuses Charlotte is living with her grandparents in Tenby.

So what happened to her parents. There is a possible early death (1892 or 1897) for Margaret (see her profile). We favour 1897 because there is an almost certain address tie-up.

As for John, he stayed in Liverpool but died in Tenby in 1913, as per his death certificate (attached). Witness: brother Benjamin.

We have possible deaths for Margaret in 1892 and 1897, the first with address given as 33 Tatlock Street and the second as 6 Torr Street... so it must be 1897 (see below).

I cannot find a 1901census for him ... but could this be him? It says born Liverpool but...

Nor can I find a 1911 census for him, but here is a crew list. This John lives at 32 Everton Terrace... but he's a fireman, so probably not him...

Is this too much of a coincedence? The address is the same as that quoted on Margaret's death record. Is he now styling himself as john Henry? This would point to his wife being the Margaret who died in 1897. But is it our John? We believe so.

There was another john Henry born 1866 in Tenby who went to India, but we have rejected him (see rejected records here at the bottom).

DEATH

This record is for a John of (written clearly) 5 Bridge Street, Tenby... His death certificate says (clearly) 3 Bridge Street. His mother and daughter were living at 2 Bridge Street... and her death certificate states 3 Bridge Street... (I think people were not sure what number their house was...)

CONCLUSION

1897 was Margaret's death, with John staying in Liverpool (not being able to look after Charlotte on his own). and living at the same address in 1911 (on the Liverpool 1911-12 Electoral role in Torr Street) and then died back in Tenby in 1913.

THIS IS NOT HIM

We had thought that John may have run away to India in about 1894 as per all the records which follow here but have now rejected this possibility (since we now have a birth for this person).
