Preceded by 14th Governor Stephen Heard |
Myrick Davies Acting Governor of Georgia 1780—1781 |
Succeeded by 15th Governor Nathan Brownson |
MYRICK DAVIES, of Welsh descent, was President of the Executive Council during the darkest days of the Revolution, and as such was, for a time, de facto Governor of Georgia, Stephen Heard had succeeded George Wells early in 1780 and from Heard's Fort (now Washington) had administered the affairs of the State. Late in that year he found it necessary to retreat into North Carolina, and the subject of this sketch was elevated to the Presidency of the Council. Georgia was almost entirely overrun by the British at this time and there was hardly a semblance of civil authority exercised in the State. Mr. Davies was officially displaced by the election of a new Council and a new Governor. Nothing is known of his personal history prior to his election to office. He fell a victim to the Tories towards the close of the year 1781.
Colonel James Jackson, on an expedition to deal with a body of loyalists, was accompanied by Myrick Davies. A group of loyalist led by Captain Brantley attacked them, and Davies was murdered. [1]
