Biography

Joseph was born in 1881.

Oddly enough, his father enrolled him at Coromandel Catholic School on 21 Feb 1894 (this isn't a Catholic family), and supplies us with his birth date. Address hasn't been completed on the record.

He passed away in 1920. Joseph contracted the spanish flu Queenie aka Gertrude his wife was busy with sick children when she went to check on him he had passed away

Influenza was on the increase at this time, The Ohinemuri Gazette^[1] reports 28 mild and 6 severe cases in the past week in Paeroa.

Two little boys, aged 10 years and 8 years respectively, sons of Mr Montgomery Davies, of Koputauaki, near Coromandel, while their parents were absent in Auckland, wandered into the bush, and got lost. For two days and two nights the person who was left in charge of house and home searched in vain for their whereabouts, and had called to his assistance a number of sympathising volunteers, who very willingly proceeded to the vicinity of the lost-ones, with the view of making a thorough search throughout the bush. Just when it was feared the little fellows might have fallen asleep, and, in their numbness, have been eaten by the many hungry pigs running about the bush in this vicinity, they luckily turned up. Having discovered their position, they managed to make their way home during the afternoon of the third day out.— Coromandel Mail^[2]

OBITUARY.

MR. JOSEPH ALEXANDER DAVIES.

We regret to announce the death of Mr Joseph Davies, which occurred at his residence just after mid-day on Wednesday last. Deceased contracted influenza, which turned into pneumonia, and he had only been ill for about a week when he passed away at the age of 39 years. It was unfortunate that during his indisposition his wife and some of his family were laid down with influenza. The late Mr Davies of late has had a deal of sickness in his family, and was previously ill for some time himself. It is only the other day that a little boy was taken to the Thames Hospital, whither another of his children has been taken since. The late Mr Davies was a native of Coromandel, where his parents reside, and has been in Paeroa about seven years, four of which he has been employed by the Borough Council. He was a man who was very highly respected by all who knew him. He was quiet and inoffensive, and a dutiful and kind husband and father. He leaves a wife and young family of five, one having been drowned near the Te Aroha traffic bridge about four years ago.^[3]

"The funeral of the late Mr Joseph Davies took place yesterday, and was well attended, the Rev. F. McDonald officiating at the graveside." ^[4]
