Biography

Henry was the son of John and Cynthia Davies; he was born in the United States.[1]

He came to Canada in 1840, and was brought up by an aunt, on his father's side, who married the late Guy Carleton Wood, of Cornwall, whose sister Ann was wife of Bishop Strachan (Ann and Guy Carleton Wood were the children of Dr. George Wood, a United Empire Loyalist who had settled in Cornwall[2]).

Dr. Davies married, on October 12, 1856, Emily Todd, youngest daughter of the William Poyntz Patrick.

They had a son Harrie P. Davies, born in Cornwall, Ontario, who married on 4 Jul 1898, Annie, the daughter of Thos Telpher and Maggie Henderson.[3]

In the 1881 census, the household consisted of:

  • Henry Davies, age 46, born in USA
  • Emelae Davies, age 45, born in Ontario
  • Carleton Davies, age 21, born in Ontario
  • Harrie Davies, age 20, born in Ontario
  • Emelie L. Davies, age 7, born in Ontario

On his death registration, his place of birth is given as Ogdensburg, New York; his profession is clergyman, and the informant is H. Crawford Scadding.

Excerpts from his biography in A Cyclopedia of Canadian Biography:

Davles, Rev. Henry William, D. D. , Toronto, was born on June 24, 1834, in Cleveland, State of Ohio, being a son of John and Cynthia Davies, of the same place.
He graduated from Trinity College with classical honours in 1855, and proceeded regularly to the degrees of M.A., B.D., and D.D., the last two being the first conferred on any graduate of Trinity College. He was appointed curate of St. Peter's, Cobourg, under the Ven. Archdeacon Bethune, afterwards second bishop of Toronto. In 1858, on receiving his appointment as master of the Grammar school, at Cornwall, he became curate of Trinity Church, under the late Ven. Archdeacon Patton. On moving to Toronto in 1866, to fill the position of English master in the Toronto Normal school, he became assistant to the Rev. W. S. Darling of Holy Trinity. While at the Normal School he wrote a series of textbooks for use in the public and high schools of Ontario. In 1871 he was promoted to the position of principal of the Normal School.
