Birth Record

A civil birth records for Elizabeth Susanna Davies, daughter of Evan Davies and Elizabeth (formerly Beddoe), shows that she was born on 21 October 1867 at 32 Glamorgan Street in Aberdare.[1]

1871 Census

Elizabeth S. Davies is listed in the census of 1871 living in the household of her parents Evan and Elizabeth Davies in Aberdare, Glamorganshire, Wales. She was 3.[2]

1881 Census

In the 1881 census Elizabeth S. Davies was 13 and living in the household of her widowed mother at 224 Cardiff Road in Aberdare.[3]

1891 Census

The 1891 census does not show her living at 224 Cardiff Road.

It is possible that she was the Elizabeth S. Davies, 23, born in Aberaman, listed in the 1891 census as a domestic servant in the household of Carl Wehrley in Cardiff. (See here.) Likewise, there is a listing for a Sarah J. Davies — possibly her sister — in the 1891 census who was also a domestic servant in Cardiff.

Son's Birth Record

A civil birth record shows that Elizabeth Susanna Davies had a son named Evan Henry Davies born on 7 September 1896.[4] The birth record does not indicate the father's name. Elizabeth's profession was domestic servant. The boy was born at 9 Vaughn Terrace in Penrhiwceiber.

Evan Henry Davies appears in the 1901 and 1911 censuses in the household of his grandmother, Elizabeth Davies, at 224 Cardiff Road in Aberdare.

1921 Census

The 1921 census shows Lizzie Davies, 53, "home duties," and her son Evan Henry Davies, 24, metal moulder, living with Lizzie's sister Catherine Emily Davies, 61, school cleaner, at 224 Cardiff Road in Aberdare.

Family Letters

A number of letters survive that were sent by Lizzie and her family in Wales, to Lizzie's sisters Sarah and Agnes in Missouri. These indicate that Lizzie was in different locations in Wales (perhaps as a domestic servant), though in 1929 and 1931 letters from her are addressed 224 Cardiff Road, Aberaman, Aberdare — this was the residence of her mother until her death in 1914.

Civil Death Record

A civil death record from the district of Pontypridd shows that Elizabeth Susannah Davies, daughter of Evan Davies, coal miner, deceased, died on 2 November 1938. She was a spinster (unmarried) and died at 224 Cardiff Road, Aberdare.

The record shows that the witness was "nephew" E. H. Davies. But this must be her son Evan Henry Davies (see above).

Note that the 1939 Register shows that 224 Cardiff Road was the household of Arthur J. Swift[5] — none of the Davies lived there any longer. The house must have been sold after the death of Lizzie in November 1938.
