Alfred was born in 1855 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, the son of John Davis and Elizabeth White Harman. [1]
In the 1861 census Alfred was living with his parents at Union St, Willenhall, Staffordshire. He was aged 5 years. [2]
In 1871 the family was living at Alma St, Wolverhampton. Alfred, aged 15, was working as a timber merchant's boy. [3]
In 1881 the family was living at 2 Grove St, Wolverhampton. Aged 25, Alfred was an engine driver at a factory. [4]
Alfred Davis married Anne [sic] Elizabeth Horton on 10 December 1882 at St. Peter's Church, Wolverhampton. Their marriage certificate recorded Alfred was a bachelor aged 27 and an engineer. His father was named as John Davis, a smith. Ann was a spinster aged 23. Her father was named as Francis Horton, an iron brazier. At the time of their marriage Alfred was living at 25 Commercial Rd and Ann at 42 North St. Their witnesses were Charles Holding and Martha Holding. Charles and Martha were neighbours of the Horton family [1861 census]. [5]
This couple had two sons named Alfred Davis born 13 December 1884 at 46 Wharf St, Wolverhampton and Francis Charles Davis born 1886 at Wolverhampton.
In the 1891 census Alfred and Anne [sic] were living at Hucksters Shop, 50 Commercial Rd, Wolverhampton. Alfred, aged 35, was a stationery engineer. Anne, aged 31, was a shop keeper. Sons Alfred, aged 6, and Francis, aged 5, were both attending school. [6]
Son Francis Charles Davis died in 1891 aged 5 years. [7]
In 1901 the family was living at 305 Bilston St, Wolverhampton. Alfred, aged 45, was still working as a stationery engine driver. Ann was aged 41. Alfred, aged 16, was a blacksmith's striker. [8]
When Alfred's mother Elizabeth Davis died on 2 October 1906 the informant of her death was her daughter in law Ann E. Davis [wife of Alfred] of 50 Bilston Rd, Wolverhampton. She was present at the death. [9]
In the 1911 census Alfred and Ann were living at 61 Bilston St, Wolverhampton. Alfred, aged 55, described himself as a stationery engine man for a washer maker. Ann was aged 51. Also living with them were two boarders, Robert E Bird, aged 45, a brewer's drayman, and John Griffith, aged 68, a coal carter. [10]
Alfred Davis died on 4 May 1936 at 48 Bilston Rd, Wolverhampton aged 80 years of heart failure, toxaemia and chronic nephritis. His death certificate further recorded Alfred had been a former engineer. The informant of his death was his daughter in law Rose Davis of 61 Bilston Rd, who had been present at the death. [11]
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Ann was residing at 20 Kipling Road, Wolverhampton. Born 11 April 1859, she was aged 80 years. Ann was then a retired pensioner. [12]
Ann Elizabeth Davis died in 1945 aged 86 years. [13]
