Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General.

Hasbrouck, a Christian minister and lawyer prior to the war, was commissioned as a Lieutenant Colonel of the 12th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry on 1 February 1862. On 11 August 1863 he was promoted to Colonel, and on 13 March 1865, to Brigadier General.[4][5]

He participated in the September 1862 Battle of Harpers Ferry, where he helped the unit escape without losing a single man, despite being surrounded.[6][7]

During a tour of Europe following the war, the General was lost in the wreck of the SS Cambria, on 19 October 1870, when it wrecked during a storm off the north west of Ireland, about 10 miles from Donegal. All except one perished. His body was never recovered. Hasbrouck was mentioned on a memorial in Worcester Rural Cemetery, Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States with a death date of 19 October 1870.[8]
